About Namibia

We thought we would post a little bit of information about Namibia to give people a better understanding of where we are going but also so that we make sure we are up to date with the current demography of the area etc.

Namibia is in Southern Africa, bordering the South Atlantic Ocean, between Angola and South Africa. It has a hot desert climate and rain fall is sparse meaning that extended droughts occur. For this reason natural fresh water sources are very limited.

This is the Namibian flag and its capital and largest city is Windhoek. For many years it was known only as South West Africa, but it adopted the name Namibia, after the Namib Desert. Namibia is a very sparsely populated country, It is the second least densely populated country in the world, after Mongolia.

Another interesting fact, the most popular sport in Namibia is football. Also a bit about the wildlife, endangered species of Namibia include the wild dog and black rhino. Namibia has the largest population of cheetah not in National parks. There are only 21 airports in Namibia with paved runways!

The HIV/AIDS epidemic is considered as a killer disease and has decreased the working class and resulted in many orphans and this is causing the government to spend a lot of money in providing education, food, shelter and clothing for orphans. On our visit we may decide to build or renovate a new orphanage however we will be deciding at our next meeting what community projects we will be doing while out there, providing we fundraise enough money to go on our World Challenge trip!

Our fundraising so far

So far we have done a cake sale, a movie and made loads of Christmas cards on demand! In 2010 we have planned a couple more movie viewings where we will sell popcorn and we also have a smoothie stall planned. In the future we are going to need to get really busy with our ideas! We will post photos of any others we do.

Hello Everyone

Hello, we decided to set up this blog so that we can keep track of our fundraising and all the decisions we make towards our world challenge trip to Namibia. Also so that we can share the journey with other people and make the most of this once in a life time opportunity! So far we have each raised £100 by doing a cake sale at our school and a movie showing. This may not seem like a lot when we have about 6500 pounds to raise between the both of us but it is at least a small step that has given us a little boost to get up and going with our fundraising! We both have lots of ideas for the new year it will just be a matter of carrying them out. In the future we will post photos of our fundraising events and keep everyone updated.

Thank you very much for looking at our blog.

Connie and Amy.
